When a recording team of the Gramophone and Typewriter Company (G&T) visited Bayreuth in 1904, it was a really adventurous expedition. A heavy recording lathe, large metal horns into which the artists were to sing and breakable wax blanks on which to engrave the soundwaves had to be transported across Europe by train. The idea of G&T was to present, for the first time in history, original cast recordings from the Bayreuth Wagner Festival - a sensational novelty for the 1904 record buying public.<br>&nbsp;<br>To celebrate this 100th anniversary, Villa Wahnfried will hold an exhibition of the history of the gramophone and issue, in cooperation with Gebhardt Records, a 12 CD box set containing not only the 1904 G&Ts, but all of the surviving sound documents of the Festival casts up to 1906 - the end of the "Cosima era": 93 singers, four conductors and two musicians in more than 300 recordings.<br>&nbsp;<br>The 12 CDs are accompanied by a richly illustrated German/English booklet containing detailed and critical analyses of the era, the performance style and the 1904 Bayreuth recordings.
