  1. Maria Yudina unlocked Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" sonata for me in a way that even Richter couldn't. This is, for me, the most understanding performance of this work--whose first movement is the most modernistic (if not avant-garde) of its time--I have ever heard. Beethoven channeled music from spheres in that Allegro no one else would hear until the 20th century. There are times when it sounds like jazz and even seems to presage Cecil Taylor. Amazing! And Yudina's interpretation of the Adagio is so sublime that I was practically in tears. You must hear this recording (vol. 4). Thank you for this gift.

  2. You are absolutely right. I heard Cecil Taylor in this. Also in the late Quartets. If you go from the beginning of the 1st Sonata, 2nd page 1st movement contains a blue chord that no one on this earth had heard before. I only understood it and heard it, when I learned the Sonata. At the time I was listening to jazz keyboard by Taylor, both Bley's, McCoy Tyner, Run Ra and Teté Montolieu. One more fascinating than the other. I was also studying classical piano and even Bach paved the way for these jazz pianists. There was also a girl from Japan. But my LP's are in storage [we're talking early 80's for the jazz recordings]. I'm a BIG fan of Richter. But I thought I understood the Goldbergs by Glenn Gould. Oh no! I went through them all, but Yudina's concept is so transparent, so clear and so overwhelming, you are in another world. One you've never heard before. My WTC is Richter's Innsbruck live performance. Richter grew up listening to this woman. So GLAD to find you here and the above comments.

  3. Wanted to ask if you had ever heard Vedernikov in that Hammerklavier. I think you'll find further light shed on this complex and fantastic Hammerklavier.
