Thank you Thang Nguyen for this cornucopia of delights - it will certainly enhance my musical spectrum - I never normally download instrumental, chamber or choral works, late 20th century music or JS Bach - but with this collection I will play it shuffled/randomly (all 5,000 + tracks, or more than 20 days listening) so as to give me a diverse programme/concert. You never know, I might even enjoy some of the music that I previously detested.
Thank you, thank you - so kind of you to share your love of music.
Of the 243 Double CDs (486 CDs) (strange number) - please confirm, anyone if this is the total amount (?) that Thang Nguyen kindly shared with us - just about 50 of the CDs did not split into their component tracks.
I wonder why?
Any thoughts anyone?
Perhaps MusicBee will "split" the CD into its component tracks - if not, can anyone suggest a simple (free preferably) programme that will do the "splitting"?
Will try playing some of these "whole-intact CDs" in MusicBee now.
MusicBee reckons: 5,893 files, 146.7gb, 24.1 days length!!!!
Just counted them all up from Pippos website - should be a total of 235 Philips Duo Collection albums. I must have duplicated a few - do not know how this has happened - very careless of me.
All these cue splitters are basically all the same but with slightly different UIs. I personally use XRecode because it is a recoder as well, so apes can be formatted to flac etc but that's just personal preference. None of them can handle corrupted files, which is where we came in yesterday

[Give us the numbers, please. For example [4xxxx-2]. Some of the problems with the .ape files may be due to accented characters from Windows Latin rather than Unicode (UTF-8).]
Example of a corrupted file: PART 3: [438803-2] Mozart - Sonatas for Violin and Harpsicord - Poulet, Verlet CD2 is really corrupted, even without splitting. (CD1 is OK)
At 04:48, what appears to be a small "pause" is actually a corruption, meaning the music cuts off. I am very certain because I have the music score with me and my own original CD of this album, which I compared the tracks with. Same for another point near the end (K31, Mvt 1 Allegro).
When the file is split into individual tracks, it does show 21 tracks in all, but Track 2 and Track 20, where the corruptions are located, are truncated (track 2 is 2:00 long only, should be 3:15, and Track 20 is 1:46 long only, when it should be 4:07 long).
No wonder Cue Splitter could not split the file. MusicBee split it, but truncate the corrupted file.
So, for all people who reported corrupted files, they are probably right and all seem to have encountered the same problem - the files really are corrupted, split or no split.
So, therefore, unfortunately, I cannot be assured that all the albums in this DUO series have been 100% accurately ripped (it will take ages to go through every CD).
However, as this is free download, I cannot complain, and we should be thankful.
I looked at the log files of CD1 and CD2. CD1 reported "accurately ripped" in 2012, using EAC. CD2 log file is just a jumble of garbage in Notepad. Can't read it. Maybe corrupted also.
Who ripped the series? Can the author please comment? Why CD1 is good, but CD2 is not.
[continue] PART 3: [438803-2] Mozart – Sonatas for Violin and Harpsicord – Poulet, Verlet
I also tried to look at the audio wave pattern of the CD2 file in AVS audio editor. But it is not able to load the whole file. It loaded the file up to 04:48 only. An uncorrupted file will be loaded in its entirety. So, something is wrong with the file at 04:48.
[continue] PART 3: [438803-2] Mozart – Sonatas for Violin and Harpsicord – Poulet, Verlet
Perhaps some people will be quite accepting of small "pauses" or interruptions, but near the end of CD2 file, instead of finishing a sonata, K31, we have of one of Mozart's PIANO CONCERTO stuck into it (1:00:45) to the end. So, you end up with a concerto when listening to a duo sonata!
I have checked on parts 1, 2 and 3 of PHILIPS DUO.
Part 1: 4 out of 20 are corrupted Part 2: 8 out of 20 are corrupted Part 3: 12 out of 20 are corrupted, including one, Avison-Scarlatti, which is totally unplayable (the booklet files are unreadable too. Anyone able to play/read them??).
I think all the other parts are like this. Seems this series of corrupted PHILIPS DUO has been around the internet on some torrent websites for quite a while. Unfortunately, Pippo9 must have posted this corrupted set.
There are other PHILIPS DUO sets available elsewhere on the internet -- good rips -- not this one. I replaced [438347-2] Dvorák - Symphonies Nos.7, 8 & 9, Colin Davis with one from another website, and it has a clean Symphony No. 7, 4th movt. The one from Pippo9 has a terrible 3-4 secs SILENCE during the climax near the end.
For the past 2 months, I have checked every DUO album downloaded from here, and can confirm that about 60% of the 242 albums are DEFECTIVE. Meaning of "defective": Splitting the files is not the problem, as there are many options available for file splitters (Foobar, Musicbee, MediaMonkey, etc). The problem lies with the few seconds of SILENCE (missing music) within a defective file (after splitting), so that the music abruptly go silent for 1 to 5 seconds. In some instances, a totally different track is superimposed into the music. Solution: Out there on the internet, there is a CLEAN COPY of every one of the 242 albums, either via torrent or blog. I have managed to replace every one of the defective files and my PHILIPS DUO playlists on my iTunes are clean copies. I also compared the files and can confirm the missing seconds in the music files downloaded from this blogger is real, not due to any incompatible splitter. There are NO silences in the clean copies. But there are also the same defective files going around in some PHILIPS DUO websites, which perhaps is where this website has copied from, especially those from CHINA and KOREA and other Asian websites or blogs. Many of my clean copies come from Russian sources or non-Asian bloggers. HAPPY HUNTING!

ReplyDeletePlease note that there are only 15 covers, but 23 links, so there is more music than it seems to be. Thanks a million, dear Nguyen

We cannot really help without looking at the actual CDs/
