strange to call Blomstedt and Sanderling great GERMAN conductors.....
ReplyDeleteSanderling is german but Suitner is austrian...
DeleteSanderling WAS German but Blomstedt is certainly not. He did conduct the Staatskapelle Dresden for a while so I suppose that's why he's included.
DeleteThank you, grabbing 1, 2 & 8

Herbert Kegel is not a kapellmeister. He is as good as Abbado or Solti.
ReplyDeleteKapellmeister doesn't mean something bad. I know that now it is sometimes used to describe conductors that are boring and uninteresting, but it is a misconception. It is a beautiful German tradition of conducting, that is unfortunately somewhat lost today.
DeleteAll 5 of these conductors are as good as Abbado and Solti, but they are also Kapellmeisters and this doesn't make them bad. Just check out all of Blomstedt's amazing Decca recordings, Suitner's electric Dvorak and Stravinsky, Masur's noble Mendelssohn and Russian music and Sanderling's harrowing Shostakovich, Mahler, Sibelius and so much more. They are truly amazing and unique conductors, whose work should be far more famous then it is.
