ReplyDeleteMy late friend Bob "The Bass" Meyer was a member of the LPO when these recordings were made. And, although he had played under just about every great 20th century conductor you could name, for him de Sabata was The Greatest,
ReplyDeleteNot sure if the greatest but he was certainly up there (for me, the greatest was Furtwangler). In this set, the Eroica and Brahms 4 are magnificent. Furtwangler had no competition in the latter work, particularly his apocalyptic finale. None, that is, except for Sabata, who is the only conductor I know who played the finale as "catastrophically" as Furtwangler.
