  2. Thanks again for all your postings, Thang!

Concerning these "interpretations" of the Beethoven piano sonatas by H.J. Lim I want to say that this pianist is manually highly gifted but not able really to understand neither Beeethoven's piano sonatas nor Bach's WTC which she also "interpretated" in her very special "soft-romantic" way.

There are so many - particularly extremly - different recordings of the Beethoven sonatas, but none of them is so marked by personal vanity like this one by H.J. Lim.
And Glenn Gould was at least awesome ...

For the music industry today, the following features seem to be important (for their profit): young, good looking and suitable as a pop star.
    That is already enough.

  3. I largely agree with your take, particularly the last paragraph. If I may be a bit of a devil's advocate, however, might it not be good in the long term to have these kinds of idiosyncratic, if ultimately unsuccessful, interpretations, that the alternative we have suffered through for decades, namely, a largely homogenized approach to the Beethoven piano sonatas? Sure, we might get perversities like Lim and Fazil Say, but we might also chance upon the unique artistry of an Arrau or a Schnabel along the way. I for one am rather sick and tired of getting a gazillion Valdimir Ashkenazys, i.e. well-executed mediocrity.

  4. Dear Gabriel,

I think you are right when you say (in my understanding) that we are waiting for new "thougts" and ways in interpretating, not only concerning the Beethoven sonatas of course. But I think we already have a number of new very interesting pianists ("new" does not depend alone on their age!).
Concerning the Beethoven sonatas I would like to cite such names as Michael Korstick who started in 2004 - aged already 49 years! - his cycle of the Beethoven sonatas (including the Diabelli variations at first), also Paavali Jumppanen, Steven Masi, James Brawn, David Allen Wehr, Daniel-Ben Pienaar, Saleem Ashkar, Mari Kodama, Zhu Xiao-Mei, Melodie Zhao and others. Not all of them in the same range, but interesting, some of them outstanding in my opinion.

Beside of the Beethoven sonatas really not to forget but highly to praise Daniil Trifonov or Severin von Eckardstein for example. There are so much really good pianists at all!

May be that it is my personal problem that I don't like such "stars" like Lang Lang, Yuja Wang, H.J. Lim and others. Whereas H.J. Lim is likely to have high potential, who knows. Brendel and Buchbinder also did not fall as masters from the sky ("sind nicht als Meister vom Himmel gefallen" as we say in German).

    Kind regards,
    Michael.
